Cute is way over-rated

8 Nov

Apparently the word “cute” was the most overused at the Finders Keepers markets. Do you know how hard it is to be faced with all the lovlies at the stalls and not use that word? Extreme. A friend and I attended the markets yesterday afternoon. B resorted to using the same word translated into Italian or French. The markets are at a lovely spot – the Old Museum in Spring Hill. Three large rooms are home to the dozens of stall owners goodies. Bought a few items and oohed and ahhed over others.

Some of things that caught our eye were brooches made from keys from old yellowing keyboards. Is that really vintage or retro enough to be cool? And cross-stitch badges with mustaches on them. Tre cutsie! They would be brilliant for our Lash and Stash party!

Current list of dislikes:

Greeting cards with messages written inside – this is not a new dislike but it is something I have been pondering the last few days in depth. Really how hard it is to write a few words. I would prefer something small and simple than a pre-written nonsense piece from Hallmark. Please leave the cliches alone and use your brain to think up something yourself. I would appreciate that much more.

The only time pre-written messages are ok in cards are if they so bad they are funny. Or just inappropriate for the recipient and that’s amusing. Eg. when my brother married he received a card from a friend that said: “Heard things have been sucky, hope they will be ducky!” or something like that.

Family stickers for cars – Oh they are awful – and something that I am seeing more and more of. Those silly stick figures that portray what makes up the drivers family life. Is it intended to show off about what you do have? And in the case of singles is it the new way to advertise what you are lacking and what you are looking for? “Oh its just me and my cat – wanna join?”

Simply had to check in for my fix of Captain Decibel. I totally agree with the disdain of the family stickers. What happens if your dog drops off? Do you just whip out the white-out and cross the poor old chap out? These thoughts keep me awake at night.

Alternatives for “Cute” – try ‘oh these are just darling!’ ‘tres chou-chou’ ‘what a little possum’ ‘just adorable’ ‘delightful’ ‘positively dreamy (best said in a breathy undertone)’, ‘the dear little things’ ‘delicious’…

Great suggestions Katty – will have to take note and use them next time and astound them!
